The short answer

Book a few days ahead in spring and around the late-summer university move-out, and book morning slots in winter if your home has hillside steps or a steep drive. Prices do not change by season or day: a sofa is $126, a queen mattress $103 and a half truck $431 whenever you book. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM, seven days a week.

Spring: the busiest stretch

Spring is when Cincinnati clears out. The weather turns, garages and basements get opened up after winter, and the first warm weekend brings a lot of decisions about what to keep. It is also one of the university move-out windows; UC, NKU, Xavier and Miami all have lease turnover clustered in spring. If you want a specific weekend in April or May, book as soon as you know the date. Weekday mornings are generally easier to get than Saturday mornings. If your job is flexible, choosing a weekday also means less traffic on the narrow streets around campus and in Over-the-Rhine. The price is the same either way.

Late summer: the campus wave

August is the other big turnover month. UC has more than 53,000 students and only about 6,500 live on campus, so most of them rent in the neighborhoods around the Heights: Clifton Heights, Corryville, Clifton and beyond. NKU in Highland Heights has around 15,000 students and only about 2,000 on campus. Miami in Oxford adds its own wave. Leases end, mattresses and couches come out, and landlords need units cleared before the next tenants arrive. If you are a student or a landlord in those neighborhoods, book early in the week rather than the last day of the lease. If you are not tied to the campus calendar, avoid the busiest days and pick another week.

Winter: book mornings on the hills

Cincinnati winters bring freezes and snow, and this is a city of hills. Mount Adams, Price Hill, Clifton Heights, Mount Auburn, Fairmount and College Hill all have steep streets, long front steps and tight parking. Ice on those steps makes carrying anything slower and riskier. If your home has hillside access, book a morning slot, ideally a day or two after any snow, and clear and salt your walk and steps before the crew arrives. Winter is otherwise a good time for indoor jobs: basement and attic cleanouts, estate cleanouts and post-holiday clear-outs. It is also when people finally deal with the broken appliance in the garage. Prices do not change in winter.

Summer and fall

Early summer is a good time for outdoor jobs: old patio furniture, a swing set, a hot tub or a shed. It is also moving season for families, which can make weekends busier. Fall is a quiet, reliable window for most work. It is a good time for garage cleanouts before the car needs to fit inside for winter, for air conditioners coming out of windows, and for clearing a house before the holidays. In Lawrenceburg, brush collection runs October 1 to November 30 through the City Garage, which helps with yard waste there. Elsewhere, check your hauler's seasonal rules.

Day of the week and time of day

Crews work seven days a week, from 8am to midnight. You choose a two-hour arrival window. Morning windows are popular for big jobs because they leave the rest of the day free. Evening windows are useful if you work during the day or if a building limits elevator use during business hours. Weekends fill up faster than weekdays, especially in spring and late summer. If you are coordinating with movers, a realtor or a contractor, pick a window after they are done so the crew sees exactly what is left. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM.

Timing around the City bulk program

If you are using the City of Cincinnati's appointment-only bulk pickup for some items and a paid pickup for the rest, plan both. The City appointment covers up to five items at the curb, set out no earlier than the night before. Book that first, then schedule a pickup for the things it will not take, like construction debris, hot tubs or anything over 6 feet tall, or the things you cannot get to the curb. There is no city-wide bulk week here, because the City program runs by appointment, so there is no rush period to avoid on that account. In Northern Kentucky, Rumpke bulky pickups need a call at least 24 hours before your trash day.

What never changes

The price. JunkRabbit's flat prices are the same every day of the year, with no same-day surcharge, no weekend premium and no stairs fee. A standard sofa is $126, a refrigerator $164, a quarter truck $241 and a full truck $732, whether you book for a Tuesday morning in February or a Saturday night in August. The order minimum is $100. You see the price before you book, and it only changes if you approve. So the best time to schedule is simply whenever it works for you, with a little extra notice in the busy seasons.
