Junk Removal in Northern Kentucky

People in Covington and Fort Thomas don’t call themselves Cincinnatians, so this page is for the Kentucky side of the river. Same crews, same published prices: a sofa is $126, a refrigerator $164, and a quarter-truck garage clear-out $241 — carried out of the house, no curbside rules to follow first.

Three Counties Across the River

Kenton County is Kentucky’s third-largest, grown from 169,064 people in 2020 to an estimated 175,779. Boone County, home of CVG, went from 135,968 to about 145,316 over the same years. Campbell County holds Newport, Bellevue, Fort Thomas and Northern Kentucky University.

Covington was laid out in 1815 where the Licking River meets the Ohio, and the Roebling Suspension Bridge has tied it to Cincinnati since 1866. Newport dates to 1795. Out in Boone County, the subdivisions around Florence, Hebron and Union keep filling in.

Northern Kentucky Bulky Rules

Rumpke hauls trash for Newport and for many subscription and contract areas across the region. Its bulky-item rules are published, and they explain why a lot of Kentucky fridges and mattresses end up with a private hauler.

Call First

In Newport, bulky items go out only after you call Rumpke at least 24 hours before trash day. Carts can go to the curb from 5 p.m. the day before.

The Freon Sticker

A fridge or freezer is collected only after a certified technician has removed the refrigerant and put a sticker on it.

Wrapped Mattresses

Rumpke wants a mattress and box spring wrapped and sealed in plastic, counted as one item. Newport asks the same of upholstery with a bedbug risk.

No Remodel Debris

Drywall, concrete, bricks, dirt and rocks aren’t collected curbside, and neither are tires, batteries or liquids.

We haven’t been able to confirm Covington’s own bulky program, or the rules in the smaller Kenton and Boone cities, so this page doesn’t state them. Check with your city or hauler. Either way, we take the fridge as it is, the mattress unwrapped and the drywall by the bundle.

Northern Kentucky FAQs

Do you charge more to cross into Kentucky?

No. A sofa in Covington is $126, the same as a sofa in Hyde Park. The bridge is our problem.

Do I need a Freon sticker on my old fridge?

Not for us. A refrigerator is $164 as it stands, and the refrigerant is recovered after pickup.

Does my mattress have to be wrapped in plastic?

Only for curbside collection. We carry it out bare — a mattress and box spring set is $143.

Can you take drywall and brick from a rehab?

Yes. Small amounts are priced by the bundle ($37 for drywall), and bigger tear-outs go by truck-fill. See construction debris removal.

How far south do you go?

Through Kenton, Campbell and Boone counties, down past Independence, Alexandria, Union and Walton.
