The short answer
Inside city limits, book a City of Cincinnati bulk appointment, carry the couch to the curb the night before, and the claw truck takes it. Everywhere else, check your hauler's bulky-item rules, which in Rumpke areas can include plastic wrapping for upholstered pieces with bedbug risk. If the couch is upstairs, in a basement or needs to go this week, a JunkRabbit pickup is $126 for a standard sofa, carried out from any floor.
The City bulk appointment, and the 6-foot catch
The City's bulk program lists couches among the items it takes. You book online or through 311, and the appointment covers up to five items. Set the couch out the night before, at the curb, somewhere the claw truck can grab it without hitting wires, parked cars or tree limbs. One rule trips people up: the City does not take anything over 6 feet tall. A sofa lying on its back is not tall, but a sofa stood on end to fit through a doorway is, so make sure it is lying flat at the curb. Sectionals come apart into pieces, and if each piece counts toward the five, the limit fills fast. A three-piece sectional plus an armchair and an ottoman already fills an appointment. If you have more than that, you will need a second appointment or a different route.
Getting a couch out of a Cincinnati house
The curb is usually the easy part. The hard part is the staircase. Over-the-Rhine rowhouses from the 1860s to 1880s have narrow, steep stairs with tight landings, and a lot of couches went in before the walls were finished or came in through a window. Price Hill and Westwood houses from the early 1900s often have a sofa in the basement rec room, which means a turn at the bottom of the stairs and another at the top. Hillside streets in Mount Adams and Clifton Heights add a run of exterior steps between the front door and the street. Measure the couch and the tightest turn before you start. Take the legs off, remove cushions and stand it on end only for the doorway itself. If it will not make the turn, it may have to be taken apart, which a crew can do on site.
Selling or giving it away
A clean couch in good shape can move quickly, especially near UC and NKU in August, when students are furnishing apartments. Post clear photos, the dimensions and an honest description, and make the buyer responsible for pickup. Expect a few no-shows. Leather and mid-century pieces sell; worn sectionals and anything with pet damage usually do not. Many donation centers inspect upholstered furniture closely and will turn away anything stained, torn or smelling of smoke. Call before you load it into a car. At JunkRabbit we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them. We cannot promise a specific couch will be donated, but the price is the same either way.
Couch prices for a pickup
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Loveseat | $119 |
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Sectional Sofa (2-Piece) | $141 |
| Sleeper Sofa | $149 |
| Reclining / Power Sofa | $152 |
| Sectional Sofa (3-Piece) | $185 |
| Sofa (Oversize 90"+ / Disassembly / Cut-Apart) | $185 |
| Sectional Sofa (4+ Piece) | $228 |
A living room set of a sofa and a loveseat is $126 + $119 = $245. Add a recliner and it is $126 + $119 + $98 = $343. Disposal and carry-out from any floor are included, and there is no stairs fee.
Sleeper sofas and recliners: heavier than they look
A sleeper sofa has a steel mechanism inside that can add a lot of weight, and it shifts when you tilt it on stairs. Tie the mechanism closed before moving it, or it will unfold halfway down. A power recliner or power sofa has motors and a transformer, plus a cord that catches on everything. These are the pieces most likely to get stuck on a basement stair turn in a Northside or Norwood house. That is why they are priced separately: a sleeper is $149 and a reclining or power sofa is $152. If you are using the City's appointment, they still count as one item each, but you still have to get them to the curb. For an upstairs or basement sleeper, booking a carry-out is often the safer call.
Northern Kentucky and the suburbs
In Newport, bulky items are arranged by calling Rumpke at least 24 hours before trash day, and upholstered furniture with bedbug risk has to be encased in plastic. Other Rumpke residential areas follow similar bulk rules. Covington, Florence and Independence each have their own trash setups, so check your own city's page. In the townships and Butler or Warren County suburbs, like West Chester and Mason, your service usually comes through a township contract or private subscription; ask your hauler what it takes and when. HOAs in newer subdivisions may limit how long anything can sit at the curb. Our price does not change across the river: a sofa is $126 in Covington the same as in Clifton.
Pick your route
Choose the City appointment if you live inside Cincinnati, the couch is on the ground floor, you have a helper and you can wait for the date. Choose selling if it is genuinely in good shape and you have a week to spare. Choose the Rumpke curbside route in Northern Kentucky if you can meet the call-ahead and wrapping rules. Choose a pickup if the couch is upstairs or in a basement, if it is a sleeper or a power recliner, if it pushes you past five items, or if you are moving on a fixed date. Booking takes a couple of minutes online with a photo, and same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM. You pick a two-hour arrival window.
Frequently asked questions
Will the City of Cincinnati pick up a couch?
Yes, couches are on the City's list of accepted bulk items. Pickup is by appointment only, up to five items, from the curb. The couch must be reachable by the claw truck and set out no earlier than the night before.
How much does couch removal cost in Cincinnati?
A standard sofa is $126, a loveseat $119, a sleeper sofa $149 and a two-piece sectional $141. Carry-out from any floor and disposal are included. The order minimum is $100.
Can you take a couch out of a basement?
Yes. Crews carry items out from anywhere in the home, including basements and upper floors, with no stairs fee. If it will not fit the stairway turn, the crew can take it apart on site.
Does a sectional count as one item for the City?
Separate pieces may count separately toward the five-item limit, so confirm when you book the appointment. If they do, a three-piece sectional uses three spots. With JunkRabbit, a three-piece sectional is one price, $185.
Do I need to wrap a couch in Northern Kentucky?
Newport requires upholstered furniture with bedbug risk to be encased in plastic before Rumpke collects it. Check your own city's rules. A JunkRabbit pickup has no wrapping requirement.
