The short answer
Sort the furniture into three piles: worth selling, worth giving away and worn out. Sell or give away what has life left. For the rest, use the City of Cincinnati's appointment-only bulk pickup if you can get five or fewer pieces to the curb, or book a carry-out: a dresser is $126, a sofa $126 and a dining table for six to eight $163.
Step 1: be honest about what is worth something
Solid wood pieces from older Cincinnati homes are the ones most likely to find a buyer. A hardwood dresser from a Hyde Park bedroom or a china hutch from a College Hill dining room has a real audience, especially among people restoring the older houses this city is full of. Particleboard bookcases, flat-pack wardrobes and anything that has been moved three times usually do not survive a fourth. Upholstered pieces with stains, tears, pet damage or smoke smell are very hard to sell or donate. Look at each piece in daylight and decide quickly. If you would not buy it at a yard sale, nobody else will either. The time you spend trying to sell a worn piece is time it spends blocking the hallway.
Step 2: sell or give it away
Local online marketplaces work well for dressers, dining sets and desks, especially near campus. UC alone has more than 53,000 students and only about 6,500 live on campus, so a lot of people are furnishing apartments around Clifton Heights, Corryville and the Heights every August. NKU in Highland Heights adds another wave on the Kentucky side. Price to sell, list the dimensions and require buyers to bring their own help and vehicle. For free items, a clear post saying 'must pick up from porch by Sunday' moves things fast. Neighbors, churches and family often want furniture more than you would expect. Do not leave a free sign on a couch at the curb for days; that turns into a problem for your block and possibly a code complaint.
Step 3: donation, with realistic expectations
Many charities accept furniture, but most inspect it, and many refuse upholstered pieces, mattresses and anything damaged. Pickup schedules for donation trucks can run weeks out. Call ahead, describe the piece honestly and ask whether they will take it before you haul it across town. Some stores will only accept drop-offs during certain hours, and they will turn you away at the door if the piece does not pass. When JunkRabbit picks up furniture, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can. That means a decent bookcase has a chance at a second life even if you do not have time to arrange it yourself. It does not mean every piece gets donated; that depends on condition and what charities will take.
Step 4: the City bulk appointment for what is left
If you live inside the City of Cincinnati, the bulk program takes household furniture like couches and cabinets, as well as mattresses, from the curb. It is appointment only, scheduled online or through 311, with up to five items per appointment. Items go out the night before, reachable by the claw truck. The City will not take anything over 6 feet tall, so a tall armoire or bookcase needs to be laid down or broken down. It also will not take construction debris, lumber, windows or hot tubs. If you live in Norwood, Cheviot, a township or a Northern Kentucky city, your rules are different; check with your own trash service rather than borrowing the City's.
Step 5: a flat-price pickup for the rest
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Nightstand | $57 |
| Bookshelf | $72 |
| Desk (Standard) | $83 |
| Dining Table (2-4 Seat) | $103 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Armoire — Small / Single (Solid Wood) | $148 |
| Cabinet / China Hutch | $160 |
| Dining Table (6-8 Seat) | $163 |
A bedroom of a dresser and two nightstands is $126 + $57 + $57 = $240. A dining room of a six-to-eight seat table and four chairs is $163 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $343. The crew carries everything out from any floor, with no stairs fee, and disposal is included.
When a whole house of furniture is going
If you are emptying a family home in Westwood, Anderson Township or Fort Thomas, pricing every piece one by one stops making sense. Truck-fill tiers cover piles and cleanouts. A quarter truck, about 4 cubic yards, is $241. A half truck, about 8 cubic yards, is $431. A full truck, about 16 cubic yards, is $732. A typical three-bedroom with furniture in every room often fills a full truck, and a basement full of old pieces can add more. Photos of each room are enough to get a quote online. The price is shown before you book and only changes if you approve. If the house has a long set of front steps, as many hillside homes here do, that is included.
Local timing tips
Spring and the weeks around late summer are busy for furniture in Cincinnati, because of spring cleaning and university move-outs. If you are selling, list early in those windows when demand is high. If you are using the City appointment, book it as soon as you know the date, since it is appointment-only. Avoid carrying heavy pieces down icy hillside steps in January; book a morning slot and let it be someone else's problem. If you are in an HOA in West Chester or Mason, check how long items can sit at the curb. And if the furniture is in a rental you are leaving, finish the job before your walk-through so it does not come out of your deposit.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I donate furniture in Cincinnati?
Several local charities and thrift stores accept furniture, but policies change and most inspect pieces before accepting them. Call ahead, describe the condition honestly and ask about drop-off hours. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.
Will the City take furniture for free?
Inside the City of Cincinnati, yes, through the appointment-only bulk program. Up to five items per appointment, at the curb, set out the night before. Nothing over 6 feet tall is accepted.
How much does furniture removal cost?
A dresser is $126, a sofa $126, a standard desk $83 and a small dining table $103. Larger jobs use truck tiers: a quarter truck is $241 and a full truck $732. The order minimum is $100.
Can you take furniture from upstairs?
Yes. Crews carry items out from anywhere in the home, on any floor, with no stairs fee. That includes rowhouse walk-ups and basements.
What if I have more than five pieces?
The City's appointment covers five items, so you would need another appointment or a different route. A JunkRabbit pickup has no item cap; you either pay per item or by truck volume, whichever fits the job.
