The short answer

Storage unit cleanouts are priced by the size of the unit. A 5x5 is $226, a 5x10 $397, a 10x10 $587, a 10x15 $880 and a 10x20 $1174. Disposal is included. If the unit is only partly full, a truck-fill tier or per-item pricing may come out lower, and the quote tool will show that.

Flat prices by unit size

Unit sizeFlat price
Storage Unit (5×5)$226
Storage Unit (5×10)$397
Storage Unit (5×15)$539
Storage Unit (10×10)$587
Storage Unit (10×15)$880
Storage Unit (10×20)$1174
Storage Unit (10×25)$1463
Storage Unit (10×30)$1757

These prices assume a unit that is full. A half-empty 10x10 may fit a smaller truck tier, like a half truck at $431.

Why people end up clearing a unit

Storage units fill up during transitions, and Cincinnati has plenty of those. Students at UC, NKU, Xavier and Miami store furniture over the summer and sometimes never come back for it. Corporate relocations to and from the Blue Ash, West Chester and Fairfield employers often involve a unit between houses. Families downsizing from a long-held home in Anderson Township or College Hill store what did not fit the new place. Estates get moved into a unit while the family decides what to do. Then, months or years later, the monthly fee has added up and the unit is full of things nobody needs. Clearing it in one visit stops the rent. Units that hold a whole household from a long-held Westwood or Fort Thomas home are often the larger sizes, a 10x15 at $880 or a 10x20 at $1174. Student units near campus are usually small, a 5x5 at $226 or a 5x10 at $397. If you rent two small units, each is priced separately: two 5x10 units are $397 + $397 = $794.

Before you book: sort what is worth keeping

Go to the unit once before the cleanout. Take out documents, photos, keepsakes and anything with real value. If there is furniture someone in the family wants, arrange for them to pick it up. Look for items worth selling, such as solid wood furniture or working appliances. Then take photos of what remains, from the door and from inside if you can. Those photos are enough for an instant quote. If you live out of town, a family member or the facility may be able to send photos for you. At JunkRabbit we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them and recycle whatever we can, so things in decent shape have a chance at a second life.

Facility rules and access

Storage facilities have their own rules. Many limit gate hours, require you to be present or to add the crew to your access list, and do not allow anything left in hallways, beside dumpsters or in common areas. Facility dumpsters are often for the facility's use only. Check with the manager before the day, and tell them a crew will be clearing the unit. If the facility requires a certificate of insurance, it is emailed within one hour of the request. Indoor climate-controlled facilities may have elevators and long corridors; drive-up units are simpler. Either way, the carrying is included in the price.

Partial units and mixed jobs

Not every unit is full. If yours is half empty, the unit-size price may not be the best fit. A unit holding a few large items might be cheaper per item: a sofa, a queen set and a dresser come to $126 + $143 + $126 = $395. A unit with a mix of boxes and loose items might fit a truck tier, such as a quarter truck at $241 or a three-eighths truck at $338. The quote tool compares these from your photos. Some people also combine a storage unit with a home cleanout. In that case, book each location separately or ask about doing both.

Why not do it yourself

You can. Rent a truck, recruit friends, load the unit, and drive the load to Rumpke Sanitary Landfill in Colerain Township, which accepts furniture, mattresses and appliances. Call first, because the landfill does not publish hours or tipping fees. Add the rental, mileage, fuel and the gate fee, and remember that a 10x10 unit packed to the ceiling is several trips' worth of a small rental truck. You will also need somewhere for the things you are keeping or donating. For a small unit near home, self-hauling can make sense. For a big unit or a long drive, the flat price usually saves a weekend.

Booking it

Upload photos or pick the unit size, see the price, and book a two-hour arrival window. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM, seven days a week, 8am to midnight. Vetted, insured local haulers do the work. If you manage several properties that use storage, an account can cover all of them. There are no volume discounts and no recurring pickups, but the prices are published and the same every time. The price only changes if you approve.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to empty a storage unit in Cincinnati?

By unit size: 5x5 $226, 5x10 $397, 5x15 $539, 10x10 $587, 10x15 $880, 10x20 $1174. A partly full unit may cost less on a truck tier or per item.

Do I have to be there?

Usually someone needs to provide access through the facility gate. Check the facility's rules; many let you add a crew to your access list.

Can you send a certificate of insurance to the storage facility?

Yes. A COI is emailed within one hour of the request.

What if the unit is only half full?

Upload photos and the quote tool will price it by truck tier or per item if that is lower. A half truck is $431, for example.

Can you clear a unit if I live out of town?

Usually, yes. Book online with photos, approve the price and arrange access with the facility, which may mean adding the crew to your access list or having a family member meet them. The price is shown before you book, so nothing about the cost depends on being there. Check the facility's gate hours before choosing an arrival window.

Do you donate items from storage units?

We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them and recycle whatever we can. We cannot promise any specific item will be donated.
